Greener Streets Awareness Month (May 2024)

I am in need of volunteers to help organize this activity. This is to coincide with Bike to workday on May 17, 2024.

Objective:

To promote sustainable transportation and ensure safe, well-lit streets in Pittsburgh District 2 by engaging residents in identifying bike commute routes and streetlight outages.

When:

Annually, for one month in May when spring is arriving and the days are becoming more beautiful. I want us all to take advantage of our beautiful district by biking to work and helping to spot the areas that are in need of refurbishment.

Activities:

  1. Launch Event: Kick off the month with a community bike ride and walk, inviting residents to join local officials in scouting out potential bike routes and identifying streetlight outages. Provide maps and route suggestions to encourage participation.

  2. Bike Commute Challenge: Encourage residents to commute by bike for the duration of the month. Offer incentives or prizes for participants who log the most miles or days of biking.

  3. Streetlight Reporting: Set up a dedicated reporting form on the campaign website for residents to report streetlight outages. Promote the form through social media, local news outlets, and community groups.

  4. Workshops and Education: Host workshops on bike safety, maintenance, and urban cycling tips. Partner with local bike shops or cycling clubs to provide expert advice and support. I would like to locate a local community bike dealership to offer classes on how to ride a bike.

Promotion:

  • Utilize social media, local newspapers, community bulletin boards, and email newsletters to promote the event and its activities.

  • Collaborate with local businesses, schools, and organizations to spread the word and encourage participation.

Outcomes:

  • A compiled list of potential bike routes and reported streetlight outages to be addressed by the city.

  • Increased awareness and engagement in sustainable transportation and community safety.

  • Strengthened connections between residents, local officials, and community organizations.
